Getting A Feel For The Past
The Gettysburg trip was a great learning experience, as well as a
good time, for the eighth grade class. Mrs. Irwin guided the class,
as she does every year, to learn more about the Civil War by actually
visiting a famous battlefield rather than just reading and taking
notes about it.
We all arrived early the morning of our departure. After a briefing
from Mrs. Irwin, we loaded our luggage onto the three buses that
awaited us. The buses were quite nice, with two televisions and com
fortable seats; the time passed quickly as we made our way toward
Gettysburg.
When we got to Gettysburg, we were assigned our hotel rooms
and given dinner. After dinner, (but not too soon after) many of us
enjoyed a refreshing swim in the hotel pool.
The next morning, we awoke early in order to go on our scheduled
tours. We visited the Wax Museum, the Jennie Wade house, and the
Gettysburg National Cemetery. We also went on a tour of the bat
tlefields. We climbed Little Round Top, saw "Devil's Den", and got
a fairly good sense of how difficult it was to fight in the battle.
The trip to Gettysburg was a very educational one, yet, at the same
time, it created vivid memories which we have all added to our own
personal histories.
During tours of battlefields,
many cannons are seen. Lesley
Brown, Kristen Nave, Laura
Solazzo, and Lauren Biloski
found one that would be a
suitable resting place.
A good soldier always salutes
fellow officers. Michelle Cor
mier and Stephanie Place
stand at attention in the pres
ence of Northern Troops.
