The Faculty Lounge: a Student Perspective
I have often wondered whether there are secret dealings being made
in the Faculty Lounge. Maybe they are plotting another Russian revo­
lution. Or maybe the faculty is shooting dice — playing Craps. One just
never knows.
The Faculty Lounge is the only room where no one can see what is
going on — the brown shade is drawn. It has the only door that never
opens all the way. It is the only place where one will wait ten minutes
after knocking, left wondering if anyone is alive in there. It is the only
place where there is a never ending supply of food. It is the only place
people will always step outside to speak. Finally, one can conclude that
it is the only place where no one knows what the heck is going on.
Supposedly, it is a place where teachers can do work in a comfortable
setting. Certain teachers have even inquired as to why it is called a
lounge because they are not relaxing in there. But the fact remains that
it is very mysterious. Why would a mere place for teachers to work be
so elusive to the average student? Is it mere work causing them not to
relax in there? If so, then what type of work is it? Are there serious
Monopoly games going on in there?
I do not know what goes on in the Lounge. Leap frog could be played
without my knowledge. A secret government plot to take over Canada
could be discussed behind that little door. A Spanish fiesta could go on
and I would miss it.
All this would go on right under my nose. It would be awfully un­
fortunate, but it would not scare me. Only one thing would: they ac­
