Nicola Hanleus, pro editoribus annaliae academiae
ad Franciscum Saccum, magistrum artium*
n dedicating our work to you, we might have thought of your thirty years
of teaching, your liberal spirit, your insistent failure to lose faith. Instead,
we thought of that uniting quality so essential that we don't know if you
realize how rare it is: balance.
The appeal of a good wine is balanced among the senses. No one sen
sation dominates any other, and all blend together as in the conversation
of contrapuntal voices. Your balance works in much the same way. You know you are
a distinct member of the body, but that you are naturally inseparable. This balance
between self and community is neither showy nor deliberate, but rather quietly as
sumed. Once in class you happened to mention a recent event we could not recall.
Students appeared puzzled. You querried, "Have you people been asleep for the past
fifteen years?" Then you were surprised. Your voice quietly raising, your eyes sparkling,
and you said gently to yourself, "I'd forgotten. I suppose you're just now waking up."
Just as your voice is counterpoint to those others, so many other voices mingle within
yourself. For example, realism and idealism balance and thus compliment one another.
Ideally, you hope your students will develop their own paths of inquiry, actively engage
in seeking the truth. You know that in some cases a little prompting is necessary, how
ever. "Work with what is, not with what ought to be," you say. Your idealism prevents
you from settling for the inferior, but your realism allows you to work to make the
ideals happen.
Because in your balance you show us how to seek the best things of life, with admi
ration and thanks, we humbly dedicate this book to you.
