My name is Maura W elch and I am a senior here at CBA. For the past 6 years I have
been involved with an organization called Free the Children, giving speeches and
raising money for the issues of child labor and poverty around the world. I have just
returned from a year as an exchange student in India. In India, I lived with 3 different
families over the course of my junior year, During that time, I had many opportunities
to volunteer, with the poor of India. At one point I traveled to Nepal and visited a
school for children of untouchable families. Untouchables are the neglected members
of the community; the beggars, the street cleaners, the desperate poor. While I was

we all must be the light, we must lead and make the world a better place. W e all
have been told how blessed we are but it is up to us to truly realize this. Maybe
you're thinking, Tm only one person, what difference can I make. If we all decide to
make a difference, and if we all decide to come together as a community, we can
truly make a difference. Think of the difference we can make when we all decide to
step up and change the world. W e all have the power to leave our mark on the
world. It is up to us to find that passion and take action.
