 The Purpose
of Homeroom How Is It Really Used?
In the handbook, homeroom was de scribed as “a quiet and organizational tim e.” From 8:26 to 8:40 the students were to be in their seats to listen to announcements and to be quiet until the bell rang. Even though this is what students were sup posed to do, it did not al ways happen this way. Homeroom, to them, was a time to get things that were not finished done, and to socialize with their friends. During that time boys fixed and straightened their ties;
because to them, looking good was a must. The girls also wanted to look good; so they constantly checked with each other to be assured that noth ing was out of place. For
some, these few minutes gave a chance to do last- minute homework.
As the students waited for homeroom period to end, they caught up on gossip. They always needed to know who was going out with whom and what somebody said about somebody else ... the im portant an nouncements of the day.
