French Trip ’94
Last April, I was one of a group of students lucky enough to have the opportu nity to visit France. I had a great time, and I asked the others what they thought of the trip. Their responses?
“The couchette.” The
couchette, let me explain, is
what we slept in on the night
train from Avignon to Paris.
The couchettes were the little
rooms consisting of triple
bunkbeds. That was about it.
The rooms were the size of a
walk-in closet — with our lug
gage, there was no room to
move. We all had to line up
with our bags at 5:00 A.M. in
the two-foot hallway, so we
would not be late.
Another popular answer to
my question was, “All those
steps we walked up on the Arc
what a bunch! Jenn Petrie,
Matt Curtin, Jason Linaberry,
Amanda Woods, Joe Stah-
lecker, Steve Judge, Linda
Semeraro, Jen Jacobson, and

de Triomphe in Paris — 285 to
be exact.” When we got to the
top, though, we could see all
the way down the Champs
Elysees, so it was worth it.
When I think of France, I
think about all the beautiful
scenery that we saw — the lit
tle houses built into the sides
of the mountains, the view
from Pont du Gard, the Swiss
Alps. Most of all, I think of the
narrow cobblestone streets of
Paris and Aix-en-Provence,
just like the ones in story
books.
We each hold different
memories of our time in Fr
ance, but we all agree on one
thing: we had an awesome
time and can’t wait to go back.
