Application
Procrastination
Why apply to college? Why can’t we just pick a school we want
and take the classes we want? Applications are a pain. Hours of
meticulous printing or typing, weeks spent on some essays, min
utes on others, postage fees, transcript request forms — it’s an
endless hassle. At one point, I almost threw my applications in
the trash can and set them on fire.
Sure, it’s easy for all you industrious, hardworking, dedicated,
determined students. “Oh God!” you say, “What if I don’t get into
(insert your favorite Ivy League school)!” You had your applica
tions in by October and your acceptances on the wall by Decem
ber.
You can’t even begin to imagine the tremendous pressure, wor
ry, stress, and even physical illness that college applications can
give the rest of us. Every day we ask ourselves, “Why do it tonight
if I can do it this weekend? Why do it this weekend if I can do it
next weekend? Why do it this month if I can do it next month?”
By the time the rest of you students had gotten your acceptances

back, we hadn’t even gotten around to
procrastinating about our applications yet.
Eventually, we got everything done,
though. If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll get in
to a few good schools. Then we can put
off deciding where to go until the deposits
are due.
