This year's fall drama was set in the early sixteenth century, during the reign of King Henry VIII. The play follows the life of Sir Thomas More, a devout Catholic and the King's chancellor, during that pivotal moment in England's history when the English Church broke away from Rome. Tensions rise between Henry VIII, the head of the new Anglican Church, and those still loyal to the Pope in Rome. All subjects are to take an oath of loyalty to the King, recognizing him as the Supreme head of the new Church. Sir Thomas More, later named a saint, proves himself a "man for all seasons" as he chooses to face punishment rather than violate his moral principles and take the oath. This unfaltering dedication to his knowledge of right and wrong causes his death in this story of intrigue, love, and devotion.
