CBA pins Fowler
Dan Mirablto, not the bes( wrestler on the Cliristlan Brothers Academy team, became an instant hero last ni^t.
The 177-pound Junior’s unexpected pin of Fowler’s Del Hildreth sparked CBA to a 29-25 Central New York Cities League •victory over host Fowler, leaving C3A
2hft>only unbeaten in the tightly-bunched “CNYfX race at 3-0, 7-1overall.
Holding a precarious 23-20 team lead over Fowler entering the 177-pound class, CBA appeared in deep trouble as Hildreth rode out Mirabito in the second period of a 0-0 match and needed only an escape in the final period to win . But Mirabito, who went into the bout with a losing sea son record, nailed his foe with a basic half-nelson hold and pinned his shoulders firmly to the mat at 4:26 to Insure the vic tory.
Fowler (3-1, 6-1), the second-year school within sight of clinching a title share, stood In stunned silence while a screaming CBA delegation banged the team gong to celebrate moving into the league’s driver’s seat.
"Give Dan all the credit. He just got himself psyched up,” said a jubilant CBA coach Bob Rust.
Both teams still have visits to 2-1 Au burn (CBA next Wednesday, Fowler Feb. 16) in the wide-open league race. CBA also hosts winless Bishop Ludden Satur day night. An Auburn victory over CBA could still create a championship tie pos sibility for the Fowler-Auburn victor lat er. Smith said surprisingly, however, "I hope CBA kicks the heck out of Auburn and wins it. Let’s say I’m just not a big Auburn fan.”
Other CBA pins were scored by Cooli- cans Matt at 98 and Joe at 136. Fowler pins were produced by George Booker at 132, W alter Cotton at 155 and Jeff Hill at 215.
In the two top matches of the duel, CBA’s Jim Gabriel scored an easy 8-3 de
cision over Fowler’s previously unbeaten Raven Byrd at 126 and CBA’s Matt Ber- sani and Fowler’s Bobby Spicer struggled to a 5-5 draw at 167, Bersani, a league and Section Three Class A champ at 155 , last year, just returned to the team after back problems. -SCHUELEIN
