The 1980 netmen directed by coach, Gary Bar- naba, won an unprecendented sixth straight Cities League championship title. The Varsity team placed high in the sectionals and even sent some members to the state finals. During the spring they went down to Duke University which proved helpful in later matches.
First singles star, Peter Vlassis, had an undefeat ed year, but lost in the sectional finals. Junior, Jim Vlassis had an excellent year and advanced to the sectional finals, too. Third singles player, Eric Wein- heimer, had a flawless year by winning the section III championship. Our first doubles team comprised of senior, Mark Moore, and junior, Steve Bersani, went
all the way to the State Competition. Dee Hale and John Sammis combined for an undefeated Cities League record, and their consistent playing was one of the keys for the netmen’s success.
The Junior Varsity Team, coached by Mr. Lavarn- way, had an encouraging year. Despite a few losses, Fritz Hottenstein, Mark LeStrange, Bill Bergan, and Mark Rupprecht were the main stalwarts. Brian Tait, Mike Geiss, Jack Mungovan, Barry Katz, and Steve Corapi were instrumental in making the team a suc cess.
The outlook for the Brothers’ Tennis Team in the 80’s looks hopeful and sure has started on the “ right foot.’’
