What’s Going to Happen After a Shooting?
After a self-defense shooting, you're going to have a thousand things going through your mind. The first thing you need to do is calm down and take a deep breath. What you do in the next few moments will determine if you’re going to spend the rest of your life in prison or not. We all know that you have to call 911, but before you do, remember that the line is recorded and everything you say will be used against you.
Call 911
When you call 911, I would recommend you say something to this effect: “I was attacked. I thought he or she was going to kill me. I had to defend myself.” Next, ask for the police and an ambulance to your location. That’s it. I wouldn’t say anything else.
Call Your Attorney or Critical Response Team
If you have a family criminal defense attorney, call them. If you don’t, consider joining the U.S. Concealed Carry Association, also known as USCCA. I became a member many years ago, and as a member, if I am ever involved in a self-defense shooting, they assist me every step of the way. I’ll talk more about this later. The value of contacting one of these two options before the police arrive is they will help you understand what to say and what not to say.
Before and After the Police Arrive
Before the police arrive, unload your firearm and lie down on the ground with your hands on your head. The police know there's been a shooting, but they don’t know who the victim and the attacker are. We don’t want the officer to
