From Our Membership Coordinator
What were YOU doing in 1971?
Well, if you were Billie Jean King, you would have been the first female athlete to win $100,000 in
st
prize money in a single year. Or, if you were Fran Phipps, you would have been the 1 woman to reach
the North Pole. And, finally, if you were the creator of “All in the Family” your show would have
st
premiered featuring the 1 toilet flush on TV! Yes, 1971 had some very interesting milestones indeed.
But I digress. This article is supposed to focus on our members. So, I repeat, what were YOU doing in
1971? Some of you may have been getting married. Some of you could have been doing what I was
doing….. wondering which colleges to apply to followed by a much more burning question, “What do I
wear to the Junior Prom?” And, then again, some of you may answer, “I wasn’t even born yet!”.
We all have something we were doing at some point in our lives, some momentous decision we made
that turned out to be a huge factor in shaping who we are. In 1971 three women in our region made such
a decision. One that has allowed them to grow individually, develop lifelong friendships, and achieve
goals they never knew they had or were capable of.
In 1971 Martha Jacovoni (Coastline Show Chorus), Carmen Culver (Champlain Valley), and Marj Gillis
(Cranberry Shores) all chose to join Sweet Adelines making this year their 50 th year in our
organization!! Talk about milestones!!!
Each of these women have made wonderful contributions to our region and to the artform of
barbershop. Their participation and accomplishments are far too many to mention here. At Fall Regional
Weekend we will be honoring and congratulating these barbershop icons and sharing more details about
each of their Sweet Adeline 50 year journeys. Hope to see you there!
Yours in harmony,
Sally Jeffery
