Life of the “Called Out” - The Church (93) Being Faithful to Jesus
That Jesus gave to His disciples and in turn to Christians a “new” com- mandment emphasizing three times they must love one another (John 13:34-35) should prompt us to study the New Testament to see the differ- ence in loving one’s neighbor as oneself and the love among Christians. In the last article, we considered unity (1 Corinthians 1:10) among Christians as the necessary foundation for this special love to develop. This love for one another sets us on the search to ponder the “one another” commands are in the New Testament.
In Romans 12:2, the Christian is commanded to strive to have the radical transformation of his mind – to switch from a mind being conformed to the world’s ways and to adapt one of Christ likeness (Philippians 2:5). In fact ,the transformation is a chameleon effect putting off the old man and put- ting on the new man – Christ (Galatians 3:27). A chameleon’s color changes to whatever color is nearby. Likewise if we stand near the world, we look like the world. If we stand near Christ, we look like Him.
Paul continued, stating Christians are like a human body, “being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another” (Rom. 12:5). The body can not be healthy unless all of the organs are functioning prop- erly. In a word this is interdependence – relying upon one another. The human body does not function correctly, perhaps not at all, if any organ works against an organ or the entire body, or fails to work at all. The body will at best be sick and at worst, dead!
In verse four, Paul wrote, “...but all the members do not have the same function.” He had earlier addressed the ailing Corinthian congregation fo- cusing on this quality of dependence upon one another –“But now God has set the members...in the body...And if they were all one member (organ, jm), where would the body be?” (1 Corinthians 12:18-19; re:12:14-26).
Paul began this epistle commanding unity of mind and judgment (1 Corinthians 1:10), and concluded this passage about interdependence stat- ing, “the members should have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it” (1 Corinthians 12:25-26). Like the organs of the body, Christians are closely related and concerned for one another.
