Ideas at Stratford set to tackle the five freedoms

Internationally recognized for world-class the- atre productions since opening night July 13, 1953, the Stratford Festival, with its Ideas programs of the past four years, is building a reputation as a centre for thought-provoking discourse and debate.
Once again moderated by Paul Kennedy, host of CBC’s Ideas, this year’s theme of Five Freedoms was inspired by U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s 1941 State of the Union address. The Festival’s series of discussions will examine relative freedom and challenges faced by individuals and within the sociopolitical sphere.
As part of The Forum, the partnership with the Stratford Festival began
in 2014 to further extend the Festival’s reach by showcasing an exploration of thought and theatrical endeavours at the annual event. The team formu- lates episodes inspired by the season’s theme, find- ing guests to tackle often contentious issues.
“I’m not sure whether it was Stratford approaching CBC in the beginning or vice-versa,” said Ken- nedy. “I know I certainly can’t take any credit for
it. For us, it’s documentary producer Philip Coulter (responsible for the Massey Lectures on the radio program Ideas for more than 20 years). He puts together the panels, two or three individuals, and is very good at logistics.
“We enjoy an excellent working relationship
with the Festival people, consulting with Keira Loughran, Julie Miles and often artistic director Antoni Cimolino by teleconference calls. Antoni already has the theme for the season, so Philip maps out necessary details with respect to topics and the availability of speakers on specific days.”
The Festival’s inaugural Ideas series included
In Rehearsal: Becoming Lear; Madness and the Prolonged War; Letters from the Front, marking the 100th anniversary of the First World War; Bottom’s Dream; Shakespeare’s Web with Peter Sellars, and Who Wrote Shakespeare’s Plays.
