12. HISTORY OF SKJOLDENÆSHOLM GOLF RESORT
12.1 HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The owner of Skjoldenæsholm Castle, Vilhelm Bruun de Neergaard had a wish of opening a golf course on his land. Golf was in the 1990´s a fast grow- ing sport in Denmark, and he saw a huge potential in creating a golf resort at- tracting members and green fee guests. At that time commercial golf facilities were not properly developed in Denmark, which made Skjoldenæsholm Golf Resort a visionary project.
Vilhelm Bruun de Neergaard contacted Herbert Frederiksen, one of Denmarks most experienced and enthusiastic golf developers. Herbert Frederiksen had been in contact with some of the most experienced golf course architects and ended up with the architect Otto Boyesen, who was one of Denmark’s leading golf course architects. The philosophy behind the design was that the course should be placed naturally in the landscape without moving much soil. Even today this course is very popular among golfers of all categories.
Once Skjoldenæsholm Golf Resort was opened in 1992, it was clear that
it was going to be popular among many green fee guests and an attractive location for company days. Already after the rst year, there had been an impressive 11,000 green fee guests visiting, after which Skjoldenæsholm Golf Resort soon became widely recognized as one of the leading golf facilities in Denmark.
Therefore, after the big success, the owners of Skjoldenæsholm decided to ob- tain a new building permit which would enable them to extend the golf resort by building the second golf course. The new course became a championship course on an even higher level than ever seen in Denmark. The new course was designed by world renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. The new, Robert Trent Jones Jr. Course, was opened in 2007, and almost im-

mediately gave Skjoldenæsholm Golf Resort another increase in the number of green fee guests together with even more bookings for company days. This course is known as a “risk reward” course in a classic Trent Jones style.
12.2 SKJOLDENÆSHOLM CASTLE
Neighboring the golf course is also Skjoldenæsholm Castle which was built in 1662, and functions as a hotel and conference center. The castle stands today as an extremely well-preserved castle, where historical atmosphere and con- temporary comfort are combined with facilities for meetings and conferences. The hotel is surrounded by a beautiful park, many lakes, forest and Skjold- enæsholm Golf Resort as its closest neighbour.
12.3 CULTURAL HISTORY
Experiencing cultural history and landscape with a long time depth is support- ed by exposed cultural relics in the landscape throughout the golf resort. En- joying a round of golf can be supported by visible cultural historical traces in the landscape. This can play an important part in the high rating of enjoyment and cultural experience. At Skjoldenæsholm you will nd everything from an old historic trail to a well preserved ancient stone assemblage located right by the golf courses.
