Anthony Joseph Ansford
1940 - 2017
New Zealand born Tony Ansford received his medical degree from the University of Otago in 1965. He also achieved a Diploma of Clinical Pathology in 1972 (Otago). He held FRCPA and FRACP gained in 1975. A practicing Forensic Pathologist, he was also the Director of Pathology Services in Queensland (1983) and served for many years. Later he became Senior Pathologist in the Forensic Pathology Scienti c Services for Queensland Health. Tony supervised many anatomical and forensic pathology trainees throughout his years in Brisbane and was very committed to training interested registrars. In connection with his interest in training he served on various committees for postgraduate studies at Grif th University.
Tony was the  rst President of the Australian Forensic Science Society (Qld) and remained in the role for over 12 years. He served on the RCPA Forensic Pathology Advisory Committee from 1980-1988 and on the Queensland StateCommitteeformanyyears. Heservedonmanyorganisationsbothwithinandwithouttheprofession, including as a Member of Council and Board of Directors, National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA).
Professor Ansford provided a well-documented and publicised af davit in the Keogh case of South Australia, and over the years investigated over 700 contentious deaths. During his career he completed some 4,000 autopsies and supervised over 8,000 autopsies. He retired from full time work in 2000 but continued in a part time capacity as a consultant in forensic pathology.
Robert Beal AM
1934 - 2016
For over 30 years Bob Beal made a signi cant contribution to the activities of the College. He achieved Fellowship in 1971 and later was a member of all of the major committees of the College, namely the Board of Education, LALAC, QASEC (which he chaired from 1988-1990), and the College Council as the SA/NT State Councillor. On the Board of Education he was Chair of the Serology Scienti c Committee which was responsible for running the Serology Quality Assurance Programme.
Professor Beal served the College as its external nominee on NHMRC from1982-1990, on NATA where he sat on their Council and then as a member of the Board of Directors from 1994 – 2004, and NPAAC 1995-2005.
A highly regarded Fellow, on many occasions he was invited to either directly or indirectly represent
the College on national and international professional bodies. He was a longstanding member of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (as a Councillor, President and Past President), head of the Blood Program for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Geneva, a member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Transfusion Medicine, a member of the Pharmaceutical Subcommittee of the Drug Evaluation Committee and a member of the review of the Australian Blood Banking and Plasma Product Sector. In recognition of his contributions to transfusion medicine, he received the ANZSBT Ruth Sanger award in 1993, the ANZSBT Peter Schiff award in 2002 and was granted honorary life membership of the ANZSBT.
A favourite saying was “Blood transfusion is like marriage: it should not be entered upon lightly, unadvisedly or wantonly or more often than is absolutely necessary.” In all activities directly and indirectly affecting the College, Professor Beal made meaningful contributions and is recognized as an energetic person of high intelligence and integrity. He received an AM in the Australian Honours and in 2006 the RCPA Meritorious Service Award. Formerly of Newcastle and Sydney, Bob passed away in Adelaide, SA.
