A/Prof Janice Margaret Bishop (Chapman)
Late of Newcastle NSW 1936 – 2018
Janice Bishop was born and raised in Bega, NSW. She wanted to be a doctor from early childhood but from the start met opposition from community and family members who believed a woman’s place was in the home. Jan enjoyed her time as a student and her residency, (MBBS 1960). She married a fellow graduate who was Resident at Royal Newcastle Hospital. At that time, as a married woman, she was not considered employable at Royal Newcastle, where the rules stated “a married woman’s role is to care for her husband and look after their children.” Janice achieved FRCPA in 1967. Highlights of her work were her involvement in the establishment of the Oncology Unit at the Mater Hospital and the amalgamation of pathology services in Hunter New England Health. As a mother of four children she showed that a woman’s role can be expanded.
