CIVMIL, from 14
his wife, Pauline, attended their first Civ-Mil barbecue some 15 years ago, when he was an Air Force major.
The general said the High Desert community has an amazing amount of congressional support and said Ed- wards will be very busy for the next five to 10 years. He touched on some of the Air Force needs at this time and pointed out that the average age of the Air Force fleet is about 28 years old, asking if anyone in attendance had a car that old and if they would want to take that 28-year-old car into war.
“That’s what Edwards Air Force Base is all about; we put the best pos- sible capability into the war fighters

hands,” he said.
He said Edwards isn’t just about the
Air Force, “It’s the Soldiers, Sailors and Marines.” Schaefer said when you support Edwards; you are supporting the entire Department of Defense.
He said other base priorities are schools. Congress has allocated 80 percent of the funding needed to re- build the elementary school; they are hoping to get additional funding to rebuild the high school as well. The general said the base is also in need of more housing, and he is working on initiatives for funding to build more housing.
Schaefer honored Knight and his
mother, Mrs. Gail Knight, with two commemorative coins. One coin rep- resents the 70th anniversary of the first supersonic flight made by U.S. Air Force Capt. Charles “Chuck” Yea- ger in the Bell X-1 aircraft in 1947.
The second coin, and one dear to the congressman’s heart, represents the 50th anniversary of the North American X-15 hypersonic flight flown by U.S. Air Force Pilot Wil- liam J. “Pete” Knight in 1967, the congressman’s father.
Both coins were designed by Rick Buckreis, chief of graphics at Ed- wards AFB.
