ACC’s A-10 Thunderbolt II, F-16 Viper, F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II dem- onstration teams. This training ensures they are certified to fly safely in close formations and primed for the upcoming national and international air shows for the season.
“Aviation safety is an important factor for our demonstration teams,” said Capt. Sky Lesh, HFTC project officer. “This al-

lows the public to enjoy what these teams are capable of, and learn about the Air Force’s heritage and mission.”
The Heritage Flight program began in March 1997, only a couple of years after ACC was activated almost 30 years ago.
“Heritage Flight Training Course is an homage to the history and modernization of our capabilities within Air Combat Command and the U.S. Air Force,” Bittner said. “We continue to educate our commu- nities through the air shows we perform in celebrating 75 years of Air Force history.”

“We’re making significant strides here at DM,” Turnham said. “As one of ACC’s designated Lead Wings, we are getting after Agile Combat Employment by improving command and control capabilities, stand- ing up our A-Staff, exercising our Air Base Squadron, and leading ACC in training Multi-Capable Airmen. Additionally, we are also standing up two fighter generation squadrons in April to optimize attack mis- sion generation.”
To further refine the Lead Wing struc- ture, future Dynamic Wing exercises are be- ing planned with an even greater emphasis on command and control. Force elements of Airmen will train and deploy together in a two-year Air Force Force Generation cycle to provide combatant commanders a swift, ready force for the high-end fight. The AFFORGEN model is projected to start in fiscal year 2023.

in formation with a P-51 Mustang during the 2022 Heritage Flight Training Course at Da- vis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona, March 3, 2022. During the course, aircrew practice ground and flight training to enable civilian pilots of historic military aircraft and U.S. Air Force pi- lots of current fighter aircraft to fly safely in formations together. The HFTC is also intended
to certify air show pilots for the upcoming air show season.
“Evolving our organizational structures, how we generate and present forces, and how we fight is key to ensuring our Airmen are ready to respond to crisis and conflict whenever and wherever that may be,” Kelly said. “The 355th Wing has made great prog- ress on that front in establishing the Lead Wing at Davis-Monthan.”
355th Wing Commander Col. Joseph Turnham established the command and control element of the Lead Wing into a structure known as an A-Staff on Jan. 4. In addition, the maintenance units that supported the 55th and 79th Rescue Squad- rons transitioned into rescue generation squadrons to ensure unity of effort between aircraft maintenance and flying squadrons. This demonstrated its usefulness during a record response to a recent rescue mission conducted in Wilcox, Arizona.
