Local veterans’ organization starts training for half-marathon
Vets 4 Veterans will meet 10 a.m., Feb. 25 for the first volunteer training session in anticipation of the groups Second Annual Operation Restart half mar- athon-5K/10K-Patriot run/walk fundraising event.
The training meetings will help ensure this year’s event provides a seamless community experience and a successful event.
Additional volunteer pre-race meetings occur on following Saturdays.
“Volunteers are the backbone of what we do ... we can’t help the veterans with any of their issues if the volunteers aren’t there to support us,” said Tom Hilzendeger, founder and president of Vets 4 Veterans.
This major fundraising event provides a unique opportunity for EVERY member of the community to come together to support our local veterans.
There are opportunities for individuals and teams to run for plaques and medals and children to run and walk their way to fitness along a one- mile course packed with medals, fun, and surprises. Those wishing to participate in other ways can help this event become game-day-ready by volunteering in one of over a hundred available positions.
Those who are simply not able to attend can par- ticipate by donating the cost of a race entrance fee to be donated to a veteran or can simply make a donation to support the run and the veterans it sup-
ports.
Half Marathon registration is $65, 10K registra-
tion is $45, 5K registration is $35, and Patriot Mile participation is $10. Team registrations of three or more receive a 5 percent discount.
Awards categories includes different ages catego- ries of both genders. Team awards are given in the categories of 1st Responders (Fire/PD/EMS/Hospi- tal), Military and Open.
The Antelope Valley Mall and Northrop Grum- man are presenting sponsors. There are two more ‘presenting sponsor’ spots available. Corporate sponsorships range in donation from $500 to $5,000.
Vets 4 Veterans Antelope Valley is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization (#80 0657134) that was founded in 2009 by a group of local Vietnam com- bat veterans who attend a PTSD therapy group at Antelope Valley Vet Center.
As they learned to “live better” with their PTSD, they realized they knew how to provide care and connection for our returning warriors. V ets 4 V et- erans is dedicated to helping veterans, many suf- fering the physical and psychological wounds of war, readjust to civilian life as they return to their families and community.
