Geographical Indication
A geographical indication is a name or a sign identifying a product as originating in a specific country, region or location where a given qua- lity, reputation or other characteristic of the pro- duct is attributable to its geographical origin.
They are typically used for foodstuffs, wine and spirit drinks, agricultural products, handicrafts and industrial products.
In some cases, geographical indications can be

Appellations of origin
protected by collective or certification marks or through special regimes of protection.
A geographical indication cannot be claimed by a single owner and has to be available for all those who meet the requirements for its use.
References to Swiss, Switzerland or Swiss symbols such as the Swiss cross are regulated in special le- gislation and the use is linked to the required crite- ria.
