“I Want to Live” and “I Want to
Vanish” are two song titles I relate to. I take pleasure in putting them on ‘repeat shuffle’ since they are consecutive in the list of 188 songs that start with ‘I’ on my playlist (the results seem predictable as there are only two shuffling). It’s fun when I lose track or the two melds into one.
Patrick and Erin recently asked, “what’s that?” then rolled their eyes at my iPod because I was still using an antiquated device. I had to admit I was guilty.
Speaking of guilt, I Want To Live is also a 1958 movie about a bad girl convicted of murder who is desperate to be saved from going to the gas chamber. I think I lucked into “I want to vanish” as it falls alphabetically after ‘live’ in my list of songs and it affirms that necessary combative attitude I hold close to my chest.
There is an advantage to being around young artists like Patrick and Erin. They have so much youthful energy that I do, and don’t, envy. Their excitement motivates me. Their music keeps me moving forward as if I’m on life’s elliptical machine.
