Talking To My Inner Self
While watching a film version of The Seagull, I’m listening to Boris’s thoughts on seeking fame.
On a beautiful summer day, Boris (a famous middlebrow writer*) is taking notes on a small notepad. He is studying family members in the story. I’m studying him while typing notes on my phone. As not to disturb the darkness of the movie experience, I’m sitting in the back row covering my hand over the phone’s glow, trying as hard as I can not to illuminate the mostly empty theater.
I find it’s best to go to movies in the late morning with the senior citizens, now that I’m one of them. There are fewer of us during the early hours and we’re generally quiet and respectful. Normally I would have blown a gasket if someone had a phone light on during a movie.
Right now, I’m experiencing a small amount of guilt, not unlike a Chekov character.
* I'm trusting Wikipedia for this character description, all the while knowing my writer friends are shaking their heads at going to this source. I just don't have the energy to come up with a better description.
