P. 7
Throughout the years I’ve collected phrases. They roll around in my mind, words both profound and mundane, lyrics from songs, lines from movies, and conversations with allies. The ones I remember most clearly are attached to moments shared with friends and lovers. I’ve written them down, always with the thought of using them for titles of works of art.
In 1990 I left California, driving to New York with a stop in Indiana-my home state. Before my journey started (and during a late night of drinking, at the Dresden in Hollywood, with three close friends), Kevin handed me a folded piece of paper. Once everyone said their goodbyes and I was alone in my car, I found written on the paper a poem titled “Shift.” As I started my cross-country drive, little did I know that Kevin’s words would guide me as a roadmap on that dark night and throughout the next 30 years. We were young and starting our lives as post-graduate students. To steal a phrase from Patti Smith, we were just kids.
What is clear to me now, is that my collection of phrases are Titles For Work I'll Never Make. They, and the stories behind them, are the work.
