The informality changed as as soon as as term started: fagging ensued along with swatting for for the obligatory House-imposed test test of school slang (see page 37) and customs If a a a a a a a a a a new boy failed the test test his designated ‘tutor’ was punished Otherwise the the school day would not be too different from now Breakfast at 7 15am was was followed by Chapel and and three classes classes from 9am Lunch was was back in House and and the afternoons afternoons afternoons were made up up of two two classes classes on on on on on three afternoons afternoons afternoons and and sport on on on on on the the other two two afternoons afternoons afternoons Supper was at at 7 7 00pm followed by Hall in studies from 7 7 30pm and and bedtime at at 9pm Saturdays comprised classes in in the the mornings and and sports
all afternoon On Sundays after after Chapel and and lunch the the the the boys had their only real free time of the the the the the week For example they might enjoy cycling excursions (authorised or or or or otherwise) or or or march as as a a a a a a a column to the the cinema where David remembers being spellbound by masterpieces including
‘All Quiet on on the Western Front’ and and in in in in French ‘Le Dejeuner sur l’Herbe’ In fact David and and his wife Marie-Josée now live quite close to Auguste Renoir’s home in Cagnes France where part of the French film was shot Sports-wise David loved boxing in in in particular and had been delighted to to discover that his Link School PT teacher Sarge Sarge had had moved to to Malvern College at at the same time as him Sarge Sarge had had been a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a stalwart support for David previously and and he he continued in in in in that vein at at the College Over four years boxing for for House and and School David only lost one match As well as as being good at at sport (except for for for cricket unusually for for for a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a Malvernian) David was academically able Trying for for Oxbridge would have involved another year at school so he he he decided to take a a a a a a a place at Durham University where he he he read Spanish with Economics After university David’s
career took him into various economic project management and and business consultancy roles in in in in in the the UK Latin America Portugal West Africa and and Iraq After co-organising the the the first British Trade Mission in in in in in Buenos Aires after the the the the Falklands/Malvinas War he he he he he worked in in in in in in the the the the the Exhibition sector in in in in in in the the the the the US Mexico and and Argentina returning to to the the the the UK in in in in in in in in in the the the the early 2000s where he he he he he he embarked on a a a a a a a a new role in in in in in in in in executive training After a a a a a a a a brief stay in in in in in in in in Switzerland he he settled in in in in in in France setting up his own
estate agency in in in Antibes which he he subsequently sold Remembering his time at at Malvern Malvern College fondly David says “Malvern truly provided me me me with much that I missed by being absent from from parents and a a a a a a a a a a a a a family base during those formative years I treasure so many memories from from from that period – academic hymns from from Chapel walks up those Malvern Hills sporting triumphs and strutting around in in in tails as a a a a a a a a a a a a School Prefect It is such a a a a a a a a a a a a shame that my parents were never able to be physically present there ” David Lee (5 57-62)
