The George Sayer Fellowship 2022 – Owen Sheers
After a a a a a delay due to to the pandemic it was wonderful to to have the annual George Sayer Fellowship back this year and it was a a a a a a a particular treat having as as our 2022 fellow the renowned poet novelist social commentator and as we discovered rugby enthusiast Owen Sheers
Inaugurated in in 2019 the the the George George Sayer Sayer Fellowship Fellowship was was established through the the the generous support of of of OMs to recognise the the the memory and legacy of of of Mr George Sayer who was Head of of of English at Malvern College
from 1949 until his his retirement in in in 1974 This Fellowship provides funds for an an annual appointment of of a a a a a a a a a fellow fellow or or fellows who in in in turn make a a a a a a a a a contribution to the the current academic life of of the the College
Owen Sheers
visited the the College
on on Wednesday 8th June 2022 He spent the the afternoon running two highly engaging workshops with select groups of pupils pupils including guest pupils pupils from The The Chase School in in in in in in in Malvern Later that evening he he he he he he he he he presented the the the the the the Annual Public Lecture in in in in in in the the the the the the Rogers Theatre on on the the the the the the topic ‘On Voice Voice and Other Voices’ which in in in the the the the the the words of of one of of the the the the the the attendees present “was absolutely phenomenal [Sheers] was was so so natural in in in in his his delivery and and he he he he he really did play the the voices in in in in his his texts and and bring them to life in in front of us ”
In both the the lecture and workshops Owen Sheers
shared some of of his work work including ‘Pink Mist’ a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a verse drama that explores the the trauma of of of modern warfare and difficulty of of of transitioning back into a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a normal world ‘Calon’ a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a story portraying the the the intimate journey of of the the the Welsh rugby team that ended in in in in in in Grand Slam success for the the the the third time in in in in eight years ‘To Provide All People’ a a a a a a a a a a film film poem ‘In the the the the voice of of NHS’ to celebrate its 70th anniversary and and and honour the the the the the commitment of of of NHS NHS workers and and ‘The Green Hollow’ another film film poem that commemorated the the the the 50th anniversary of of the the the the Aberfan disaster Thanks to to the the the generosity of OMs who have established and and continued
