Regulating gas and electricity in the UK
Alistair Buchanan is is a a a a a a a leader in the energy and regulated utilities sector with over 40 years in in the industry In 2008 Alistair received a a CBE for his services to the development of energy policy Alistair describes his career as as “quite unusual” in in in in in in in that it it it it it can
be be categorised into four distinct chapters though always
with with an an an an an energy and and utilities focus he first trained and and qualified as an an an an an an an an an Accountant with with KPMG before becoming an an an an an an an an an award-winning energy sector analyst and Investment Banker in in in New York He returned to to the the UK
where he he he he would spend 10 years as as Chief Executive of of the the the Office of of Gas and and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) which serves
as as as the the the the the UK’s gas and and electricity markets regulator regulator While at at at at Ofgem Ofgem Alistair led the the the the the the creation of o of the the the the the the regulatory structures for both the the the the the the offshore wind industry and the the the the the the total revision of o of the the the the the the onshore network regulatory regime He is is now the the the Non-Executive Director at at Storegga Limited a a a a a a carbon capture and hydrogen company Alistair insists it it was the breadth of of education he he he received at at at Malvern coupled with “a degree of of confidence” that when combined gave him the opportunity to try different career paths It was was during these formative years at at at at Malvern that his awareness of sustainability was was was first ignited “I studied Geography at at at at A Level and and one of of of the the key course elements was was was about pollution and and smog which preceded many of of of the the concerns we have today I was was very aware of of of sustainability from a a a a a young age ” Alistair believes that sustainability should should be be be seen seen as more than just environmental it it should should be be be seen seen in in social terms too “Much of my career has been focused on vulnerable vulnerable people vulnerable vulnerable customers and social issues If you look at at at what Malvern College
was was was doing when I I was was was at at at at school with its voluntary service programme and other initiatives it it it it was was was acknowledging that broader phrase of sustainability even back then This really helped to to to shape my interest in in in this area and to to to know that I could make a a a a a a a real difference to to to society ” Alistair Buchanan
