by, Jane Stratton (née Davies) at the Horse of the Year Show, and Karen Malim and Di More in Somerset. She also saw Nettie Ellis (née Corah) and Alison Trickey (née Sellman) before Ali passed away. Sally reports that Ali remained positive throughout, texting her in January after her 60th birthday that ‘My only plan is to enjoy each day as best I can’. On a happier note, Sally’s partner and she are planning a wedding after their engagement in Brisbane! Whilst on holiday in Australia, she met up with Helen Daisley (née Stowe) and Caroline Sperry (née Brooke). She carried on to New Zealand where she met up with Jo Ferguson (née Ward) and Laura Davis (née Simon), little knowing that three weeks later the latter would be their hostess again for an- other seven weeks when they were unable to get back home owing to lockdown!
Of course, COVID has prompted so many of us to ‘meet’ via the internet. Sally Thomas reports that the ‘Class of 1970’ organised a Zoom meeting: as well as those attending from the UK, they had Sue Fawcus and Sal- ly Moon from South Africa, Antonia Bryson from the USA, Fiona Turner from Luxem- bourg and Sylvia Meryon from France - a truly international gathering and amazingly good fun too! At the meeting a few weeks lat- er they were joined by Tiru Fernando in Sri Lanka. Hearing everything that had happened in people’s lives was amazing, we had some wonderful memories, and as a result of doing this, we received an invitation to join Rowena Fleming in August at her wedding on Zoom - it was magical to be able to see the ceremony and wish her well.
Although ‘well past retirement age’, Eliza- beth Stockman (née Scale) stills work as a freelance copy editor for the British Medical Association. She keeps in touch with several of those in her year including Gill Charnley (née Collins), Carry White (née Millard) and Michèle Edwards-Clark.
Gloria Thomas (née Staight) has had a sec- ond hip operation, which was a success. Her three grandchildren at university, anoth- er a drummer in The Estavans Band and the youngest doing business studies keep her
going with their news. Gloria has seen Car- ole Toovey and Sheila Savage several times this year, Caroline Brooks, and nephew, Guy Staight (8.71-75).
Having decided that July 2020, after 38 years of teaching and working at Ellerslie and Mal- vern College, would be a good time to retire, Kim Tutcher has had to re-think her plans! Furloughed from March to June, she decid- ed to do a few hours from September. ‘So, here I am,’ says Kim, ‘still at Malcol, working 24 hours over 2 days, and “retired” the other 5 days a week!’
Beverley Willersea (née Thomas) speaks for the elderly in highlighting the mental health consequences of social distancing. But, she writes, ‘Let’s keep an optimistic attitude and look forward to better times.’
Eileen Crewdson (née Jones) (42-51) has been in contact with several old girls: Pad- dy Browning (née Young) (43-51) is still liv- ing in Nefyn, North Wales, aided by her son who now lives nearby, and Molly Powell (née John) (45-51) who is still farming. She reports that Maureen Webb (née Hurford) and her husband are still at home, but still mobile with their scooter and rollator.
