Educated at at at Winchester House School and Malvern-in- Harrow John then served as an an an an R N N rating in in in in in H H H H M M M Cruiser Newfoundland and and in in in in in in H H H M M M M Destroyer Camperdown before gaining an an an an M M M A in in in in Mechanical Sciences at St John’s College Cambridge John worked in in in the oil oil industry with Hayward Tyler Trinidad Regent Mobiloil Vacuum Oil Company and and I I C C I I successively in in in in construction maintenance design and and cost engineering He was one of of of the the founder members of of of the the Association
of of of Cost Engineers and proud to have Roll No 54 From 1968 he he he he was a a a a a a a Liveryman of the the the Joiners & Ceilers Company twice their their Master and from 1981 their their Chaplain He was also on on on on the the the the the the Corporation of of of of the the the the the the Sons of of of of the the the the the the Clergy the the the the Court of of of of City University and of of of of Syon College John was Ordained in in in St Albans Abbey in in in 1981 and became curate then Rector of of a a a a a a a a a a a group of of five village churches in in in in 1987 retiring in in in in 1996 He He was was also Chaplain to the the Herts St Johns Ambulance Brigade and was was awarded their Service Medal John married Margaret in 1954 they had three three sons six grandchildren grandchildren and and and and and three three great grandchildren grandchildren and and and and and celebrated their golden and and and and and diamond weddings He loved drawing painting restoring antiques and playing the trumpet Jacobs Alan John Lawrence
Died 25 July 2020 aged 90 After Malvern Alan did two years’ National Service in in in the the the Army Intelligence Corps then returned to the the the family clothing and and furniture business In In 1954 he he he he he he married his childhood sweetheart Claire and and and they were blessed
witha daughter and and two sons From 1969 Alan began to deal in in in in masterpieces of of the the late 17th century school of of Dutch landscape painting with a a a a a a a a a a a a a a gallery in in in in the the West End Alan wrote and and and published a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a great deal of of of poetry He was a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a scholar and and and and the author of of of a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a number of of of books including ones on on Gandhi The Dalai Lama and and and Bhagavan Sri Ramana Ramana Maharshi Maharshi Indeed above all else it it is is his work with the Ramana Ramana Maharshi Maharshi Foundation for which he he will
be be fondly remembered Alan’s kindness his his his his quiet humility his his his his his warmth his his his his his accessibility and and friendliness his his his his his availability to help in in in any any personal situation his his his his charm and and and sense of humour – these and and many other qualities gained for him him a a a a a a a a a a a a a very special place in in the the the affections of those who knew him him Naylor Geoffrey Hartley
