Harvey & Kathryn Gold Family
Harvey & Steven 4 Generations at Granddaughter’s Baby Naming Dec 13, 2014 at Or Chadash Bar Mitzvah 1962 Katherine Beth Beman, Elisheva Zahav, Daughter of Kimberly & Doug
My grandparents were immigrants from Russia who came to America just after WW1 to escape persecution by the Bolsheviks. Of their family of 12 children, mostly adults, only 5 escaped. My Mom lived in a Jewish section of Brooklyn with her sister & brothers close by. After WW2 my Mom married & had 3 boys, two of which were identical twins. We lived next door to a small Orthodox synagogue, played with the Rabbi’s children and learned their traditions. During the summers we stayed at a Jewish Bungalow Colony in the Catskills. The men came up on weekends. That is where I fell in love with the country and woods, farms, rivers, lakes and wildlife.
When I was 9 my Dad’s brother started a business in New Jersey and we left Brooklyn. We settled in a Garden Apartment complex in East Paterson with primarily Jewish families. They had “open doors” and became our extended family. I went to college at Rutgers in New Brunswick during the generation of the late 60’s. I met my future wife Kathy there. I think she fell for me during Woodstock. Kathy was not Jewish, but it wasn’t an issue for us. Several years later we were blessed with two wonderful children, Kimberly and Matthew, the joys of our life.
My wife and I both loved the country and moved to Hunterdon County in 1976. However, I missed the connection to my Jewish culture. The Conservative synagogues of the times did not embrace mixed-religion couples. I was thrilled when in 1989 Or Chadash opened and warmly welcomed families of mixed religion and created the connection to the Jewish Community with great educational programs and activities. I joined and have been a member ever since.
In 2014 & 2015 my dreams came true. First my daughter Kimberly and her Christian husband Doug joined Or Chadash and had their baby naming there. Four generations were on the bimah in our “home synagogue”. Next my son Matthew and his Christian wife, Jaimee, who live in Nazareth Pa, joined Or Chadash and are sending their children, ages 5 & 7 to Hebrew school there even though it is almost an hour away. A real credit to Or Chadash for being so special.
To keep Or Chadash vibrant and affordable for future generations, We are honored to provide Legacy funds.
