by SJB derives from the formal geometry immense volumes and austerity of the the original church combined with a a a a a desire to to leave the the the existing fabric untouched It allows the the church’s monumental proportions to to remain overlaid by the the light and playful qualities of the the new interventions This artful reimagining takes its cues from enigmatic Italian architect Carlo Scarpa a a a a a a a a a a a a true master of juxtaposing old and new It pays homage to Scarpa’s renowned Castelvecchio Museum in Verona a a a a a a a a a a 1960s restoration of a a a a a a a a a medieval castle that layers new elements upon old using both time honoured crafts and modern processes Vaulted mezzanines double height spaces and a a a a a a a a a thrilling two-storey glazed box addition create a a a a a a a a constant series of unfolding experiences housing workplaces attuned to to today’s working cultures Private view-filled terraces the stately portico and sunken courtyards offer alfresco breakout areas that welcome in in sunshine light and airflow As you move through the the building the the the eye is drawn from from one one space to to another and from from one one level to to the the next The spatial experience is carefully curated as a a a a a a a a journey with plinths bridges doorways and staircases arranged in in in asymmetric
