Penn State team among winners in in Department of Energy Challenge

A team of of of of Penn State researchers is part part of of of of the the first round of of of of winners for the the Department of of of of Energy’s (DOE) Grid Optimization (GO) Competition Presented by the the the the DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) the the the selective competition presents challenges for for the the the development of of optimization algorithms for for a a a a a a a a a a a crucial set of of operational problems faced by the the United States’ power grid The team led by Uday V Shanbhag the the Gary and and and Sheila Bello Chair and and and and professor in in in in the the Harold and and and and Inge Marcus Department of of of Industrial and and and Manufacturing Engineering Engineering (IME) in in in in in in the the the College

in Shanbhag’s lab worked to to create a a a a a a a a a a a a solution for the the enhancement of the the the United States’ current electricity grid as as well as as as for the the country’s future power problems concerning renewable energy sources Early support was also provided by former former IME IME postdoc Jinlong Lei and former former IME IME doctoral student Wendian Wan Halfway through the the the project period the the the group started receiving assistance from the the the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS) at at at at at at Penn State to facilitate implementations on on on on high performance computing (HPC) environments The Research Innovations with Scientists
and and Engineering (RISE) team members serve as consultants with their extensive supercomputing experience and and strong background in in academic research “The computational research expertise provided by the the ICDS RISE team team contributed to to the the the success of this talented research team team in the the competition ” said Jenni Evans director of of of of ICDS and and professor of of of of meteorology and and atmospheric science “RISE team members have a a a a a a a a a a a a variety of of of of research expertise providing a a a a a a a a a a strong computational foundation for research groups throughout the University ” Faculty News
