Scarlett Miller becomes director
Scarlett Miller associate professor of of engineering design and industrial engineering has been named the new
director
of of of the the School of of of Engineering Design Technology and Professional Programs’ (SEDTAPP) engineering design (DESIGN) program Miller began her duties on Feb 1 assuming the the role previously held
by Matthew Parkinson director
of the the Bernard M M Gordon Learning Factory and and professor of of engineering engineering design and and mechanical engineering engineering Parkinson will continue to to to serve as the the the director

Timothy Simpson Paul Morrow Professor of of Engineering Design and Manufacturing in in in in in in in the College of of of Engineering is leading MASC an an an effort to to address the the growing need for for face masks ventilators and other personal protective equipment (PPE) An interdisciplinary team of more than 350 Penn State faculty staff and students mobilized to address the widespread shortage of protective gear by creating fast and and scalable solutions for sterilizing and and manufacturing PPEs When the opportunity arose Vittal Prabhu professor of of industrial engineering and and Charles and and Enid Schneider Faculty Chair in in in in in Service Enterprise Engineering jumped on the chance to assist Prabhu’s advisees doctoral student student Amol Kulkarni and master’s student student Rohit Rawal rapidly developed a a a a a a a a a a a a working data visualization map to identify local supply chain systems in in in Pennsylvania and and and provide a a a a a a a a a a quick way to search and and and identify Food and and and Drug Administration-registered companies The map is is able to to quickly aid users to to make effective decisions via various filter criteria with the simple click of a a a a a button “There are are are health care workers retailers and others that are are are working on on the the the frontlines ” Prabhu said “If engineers can help them be more productive then I view it as our call of duty to contribute ” IME joins for night of togetherness
Students faculty and and staff from the Harold and and and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and and Manufacturing Engineering (IME) came together on Friday April 3 for a a a a virtual evening of togetherness
Soundar Kumara Allen Allen E Pearce Pearce and Allen Allen M Pearce Pearce Professor of of Industrial Engineering imagined the the idea as a a a a a a a a way to unite the the department for an an evening of relaxation and bonding even even from a a a a distance Nearly 50 participants logged in in to see the performances that included stand-up comedy poetry singing piano electronic music violin and and juggling The group also played trivia and and a a a a a a a a a guessing game on faculty and and staff’s high school photos Danielle Fritchman administrative support assistant helped to organize and and plan the event while Sarah Root associate teaching professor and and undergraduate adviser served as as as the the master of ceremonies for the the night Enrique Del Castillo returns from Fulbright
Enrique Del Castillo distinguished professor professor of of of of industrial engineering and professor professor of of of of statistics at at at Penn State returned in in early spring 2020 from his Fulbright
U S S Scholar Program where he he he conducted research at the University of Coimbra Coimbra in Coimbra Coimbra Portugal Awarded by the J William Fulbright
Foreign Scholarship Board Del Castillo was one of approximately 800 U S S citizens selected to take their expertise abroad for the the the 2019-20 academic academic year through the the the the program Recipients of of Fulbright
Awards are selected on on the the basis of of of of academic academic and and professional achievement as as as well as as as record of of of service and and demonstrated leadership in their respective fields The research project for which he he he was granted the Fulbright
Fellowship titled “Optimization and control of industrial production processes by active learning methods based on on ‘big’ and and complex data ” sought collaborative research between Penn State’s Engineering Statistics and and and Machine Learning Laboratory and and the the University of of Coimbra’s chemometrics group in in in in the the Department of of Chemical Engineering Del Castillo worked on on on the optimization of production processes via machine learning for various industries with the the chemometrics group in in in in in particular they focused on wine paper and pharmaceuticals IME NEWSLETTER • VOLUME 2 2 2 2017 21
