  92130 SCHOOLS
The schools in 92130 are a big draw for families. Before the elimination of State’s Academic Performance Index (API) in 2014, out of the 437 public elementary schools in San Diego County, all of the elementary schools in 92130 scored near the top of the index. The API is a numeric index ranging from a low of 200 to a high of 1000 that reflects a school’s performance level, based on the results of statewide testing.
Carmel Valley has an overlay of various school districts. All of the communities are within the Del Mar & Solana Beach School Districts except Torrey Del Mar and Vicinty which is within the Poway Union School District. For the elementary schools, the northern section is part of the Solana Beach School District (K-6). The southern section is managed by the Del Mar Union School District (K-6). Overlaying the entire community, the San Dieguito Union School District manages the middle schools and high schools.
The map within this booklet shows the location and boundaries of the schools that are available to the residents of 92130 except Torrey Del Mar and Vicinity. There is also a listing of each school and the web site for each district. For in-depth information on each school, go the school district’s web site. Then you can select the school of your choice and read about its specific curriculum, awards, etc.
The region is also home to two of the most prestigious private schools in San Diego; Cathedral Catholic and the San Diego Jewish Academy.
In the past we have shown a comparison on API school scores for San Diego County. On September 11, 2013 Governor Brown signed Assembly Bill “AB 484” which immediately suspended the Academic Performance Index (API) as of the school year 2013. It was determined the school scoring system did not fairly or accurately reflect the performance of a school and did not take into consideration diversity, % of students accepted to college, etc. The new bill will fund a trial run of a new “Smarter Balance Assessments Program “, which will be taken on computers and are aligned with Common Core. The California State Board of Education approved not to calculate the 2015 Growth and Base Academic Performance Indexes for elementary, middle and high schools and local educational agencies. However, they have recommended the 3 year weighted average (2011-2013) as a measure of reflecting school results.
