CARMEL VALLEY CORE North of Del Mar Heights Road & South of Del Mar Heights Road
The earliest settlers were California Indians who left artifacts along the Carmel Creek bed. A Spanish soldier named the area Cordero, and early American settlers named other areas after themselves, such as McGonigle Canyon. The name Carmel Valley comes from the Carmelite Sisters of Mercy, who established a dairy farm and monastery in 1905. Although the area was known locally as Carmel Valley, in 1974 the area was given the institutional name North City West in the master plan. The core of Carmel Valley was formed by the City of San Diego in 1975. The name Carmel Valley was readopted in the early 1990’s. The first building stage started in this area around 1983. The area between here and Rancho Pacifica is reserved for open space and no building or development is permitted.
