 Avoiding an Unnecessary Transplant
The cousin of a 9 year old girl with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) contacted PinnacleCare when she questioned the expertise of the girl’s local physicians. The girl had undergone two successful bone marrow transplants but her care was compromised by post- transplant interstitial pneumonia. The recommendation by the local physicians was a lung transplant.
PinnacleCare collected all of the medical records and pertinent radiology images and submitted them to the Chief of Pediatric Pulmonologist at a Center of Excellence for an urgent virtual second opinion. The expert pulmonologist reviewed the case and quickly came back disagreeing with the local physicians - he thought a lung transplant was a hasty, unnecessary and dangerous procedure at that point in her care. Instead, he suggested a one month trial of steroids and other medications. The girl recovered from the pneumonia several weeks later and has never required a lung transplant.
