Obtaining the Right Care
A 53 year old male with rectal cancer and multiple liver metastases wanted to confirm that he was following the most appropriate treatment path. He was not a surgical candidate and the recommendation by his local oncologist was systemic chemotherapy.
PinnacleCare obtained a virtual second opinion on his behalf from a nationally renowned oncologist with expertise in colorectal cancers. The expert came back, agreeing with the current recommendation but strongly suggesting molecular testing on the tumor. PinnacleCare quickly facilitated the additional testing with the patient’s local oncologist. The results showed a mutation which causes a less favorable response in patients with this mutation when using a particular class of chemotherapy drugs - the very same class of drugs that his oncologist recommended for second line treatment if the first line treatment failed.
