PROJECTS
REDEFINING THE FUTURE OF ART AND DESIGN
The Royal College of Art has always been at the forefront of innovation and growth – anticipating societal challenges and delivering real-world impact. That impetus is visible all around us, in the cars we drive, the digital and consumer products we use, the clothes and accessories we wear and the cultural artefacts that define our times.
Looking forward, we must provide new programmes, research and scholarship opportunities to guide those unique imaginations – individually and collaboratively – towards answering the questions of tomorrow.
By creating a STEAM-driven university, we will challenge intersecting human, material and digital developments, and explore solutions through robotics, nanotechnology, biodesign, autonomy and interconnectivity (‘the internet of things’).
We will place our students alongside scientists and engineers at the beginning of collaborative projects and research questions, and reverse the current orthodoxies that typically place design at the end rather than the beginning of scientific or engineering projects.
We will establish new centres for world-leading research and continue to recruit the best academics from around the globe. Pioneering new programmes will include medical design, design robotics, city design and environmental architecture – underpinned by new knowledge-exchange labs, and research centres in intelligent mobility, materials science and computer science. And all will be placed, of course, alongside sculptors, painters, curators, writers and filmmakers.
