The Nike Prize
Eligibility: All Scholar-Athletes
Award Amount: $5,000
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., once reflected upon the impact of Jackie Robinson’s
heroic entry into the nation’s pastime saying, “He was a freedom rider before
freedom rides.” In recognition of sport and its power to effect change, this award
celebrates the impact an athlete and sport can have on society. Created in 2008,
with a generous gift from Nike, Inc., the Nike Prize grants $5,000 annually to the
JRF Scholar/athlete who exemplifies through his or her actions, the ways in which
commitment, advocacy, and innovation can unite and challenge a community to
change for the better.
GE-Lloyd Trotter Award
Eligibility: Sophomores & Juniors
Award Amount: $5,000
General Electric and the GE Foundation have supported JRF since 1984. Lloyd
Trotter is the former Vice Chairman of General Electric, and President and CEO of
GE Industrial. A leader in the mold of Jackie Robinson, Mr. Trotter maintained a
commitment to the community and developing a diverse workforce, exemplified by
being a founding member of the GE African American Forum. The GE-Lloyd Trotter
Award honors a JRF Scholar who has demonstrated exceptional talent in the realm
of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics by successfully creating and
conducting an innovative and unique STEM project.
Unilever Legacy of Leadership Award/s
Eligibility: JRF Juniors
Award Amount: $5,000
The Unilever Legacy of Leadership Award was created to honor a JRF Scholar in his/
her junior year who, through exemplary leadership, has made a positive impact on
society at-large. It is presented in the spirit of Jackie Robinson Foundation Founder
Rachel Robinson who has said “no one who dares to stand up and challenge the
status quo, does so alone.” This award celebrates a Scholar who has found, created
and seized opportunities to advance the betterment of a community, and inspired
others through service. Established in 2003, the award may be used towards
furthering a community service initiative of the awardee/s’ choice.
