Policies and Procedures
Academic Policy
Authorized Institution
JRF scholarships can be used at an accredited and approved four year-college or
university in the United States. JRF scholarships are transferable – a JRF Scholar
may transfer his or her scholarship at any time to another accredited university upon
approval of JRF staff. You must inform JRF if you transfer to another institution.
Course Load
To satisfy the requirement for the JRF scholarship award, you must carry a full
schedule of classes during each semester that you receive funding. Colleges and
universities have their own definitions of full-time enrollment–you must attend at
least the minimum number of credit hours that your university defines as full-time
attendance. You MUST notify JRF staff if you drop below full-time enrollment as
defined by your college or university.
Any student dropping below full-time enrollment status without advance written
permission from the Foundation is in violation of the terms upon which the JRF
scholarship was awarded and that student’s scholarship is subject to immediate
termination at the Foundation’s discretion.
GPA Requirements and Academic Monitoring
JRF Scholars are required to maintain a record of strong academic performance.
Academic performance is generally measured by a student’s grade point average
(GPA). Below you will find the standard breakdown of GPAs at most colleges and
universities. Scholars who do not maintain a solid record of performance can expect
one of the following interventions:
GPA: JRF Action
2.9 to 2.51: Email from JRF staff advising of pre-warning status;
2.5 to 2.1: Phone call and follow-up e-mail from JRF advising of formal warning
status;
2.0 and Under: Scholar placed on probation; required to submit academic plan and
adhere to regular schedule of counseling with JRF advisor;
Two consecutive semesters of 2.0 and Under: Suspension of grant/participation in
JRF activities for one semester; counseling by JRF advisor.
See Section “Discipline” for additional information.
