Alcohol and Substance Abuse Policy
Any Scholar, including those who are 21 or older, caught buying, carrying, drinking, or in
the possession of or under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs at any point during a
JRF-sponsored activity will be sent home, at his/her own expense, and will lead to an
evaluation of her/his participation in JRF activities altogether.
Discipline
As a JRF Scholar, you are a representative of the Jackie Robinson Foundation and are
expected to comply with all policies and procedures laid out by JRF and to conduct
yourself with the highest degree of personal and professional integrity. As a result,
JRF may withdraw scholarship support or special privileges at any time for any Scholar
involved in conduct that is deemed inimical to the goals, values or reputation of JRF. Any
violation of law, academic policy, or common standards of decency could result in a series
of sanctions including revocation of privileges, suspension, or even expulsion from JRF’s
program. Such breaches include, but are not limited to:
• Failure to comply with academic requirements (see ACADEMIC);
• Violation of JRF’s alcohol and substance abuse policy and/or policy against
harassment (see ACADEMIC);
• Failure/refusal to meet JRF deadlines, complete surveys, or participate in required
activities;
• Inappropriate use of social media forums;
• Personal or professional conduct unbefitting a JRF Scholar or antithetical to JRF’s
core values;
• Criminal conduct.
Probation
A Scholar may be placed on probation for poor academic performance or behavior deemed
unacceptable for a JRF Scholar as laid out otherwise in this handbook. Scholars will be
notified in writing of the reasons for and terms and conditions of probation. Scholars
placed on probation for poor academic progress are required to check in regularly with
a member of the JRF Program staff and submit an academic plan for improvement.
Scholars on probation will continue to receive scholarship funds and may, upon approval,
participate in official JRF events. Scholars who serve more than two consecutive
academic terms on probation will be evaluated for suspension.
