Financial Grant

JRF scholarships complement the financial aid students receive from their college or
university for tuition and other educational expenses (books, housing, etc.). Scholars are
also financially sponsored to attend JRF’s New Scholar Orientation (NSO) that occurs
during the summer before Freshman year and the Mentoring and Leadership Conference
(MLC) in New York City every March during each of the college years.

        Disbursement of Funds
Scholarship funds are disbursed based on a four-year college schedule. Scholars planning
to enroll in a five- year academic program must notify the JRF Program staff of their
plans before the beginning of their sophomore year, so that the payment schedule can be
        adjusted accordingly.

Scholars receive up to $7,500 in direct scholarship aid annually. The funds are allocated
according to assessed need and the number of terms of one’s academic year. Thus,
Scholars on a semester schedule receive half of their scholarship payment per term
and $200 in advance of the Mentoring and Leadership Conference. Likewise, Scholars on
a trimester or quarterly schedule receive a third of their scholarship payment per term
and $200 at the Mentoring and Leadership Conference.
Scholars will be paid via direct deposit to a checking or savings account at a registered
and FDIC-insured U.S. financial institution. Accounts must be registered in the Scholar’s
name, and banking information must be submitted to JRF using the Foundation’s secure
transmittal system. If the Scholar submits invalid or incorrect banking information and
the deposit is returned, a fee of $15 may be accessed. This fee is not deductible from the
        scholarship award.
After the initial award disbursement during the fall term of each Scholar’s freshman year,
scholarship payments will be made only upon receipt of each previous term’s official
transcript and any additional submissions of required documents. For graduating seniors,
the final $500 of the four-year scholarship will be paid upon receipt of the final term’s
transcript and completion of JRF’s final Scholar survey.
In addition to direct scholarship aid, the transportation and lodging expenses associated
with attending the New Scholar Orientation and the annual Mentoring and Leadership
Conference are borne by the Foundation. JRF will help coordinate each Scholar’s travel
through a travel agent and will provide the Scholar with a stipend for him/her to cover
the cost of meals, ground transportation and other incidentals related to conference
        attendance.
