Use of Funds
JRF Scholars may use their JRF scholarship only for: 1) tuition and fees required for
the enrollment or attendance at an accredited college or university; and 2) fees,
books, supplies, and equipment for courses of instruction at such institutions. Any
exceptions to this use of funds must be specifically approved, in writing by the
Vice President,Core Programs of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, and relevant
documents and proof of use may be required.
Compliance with the Internal Revenue Service
Any JRF grant funds not used for “direct educational purposes” are taxable as
“income” under federal tax law and such amounts must be reported to the Internal
Revenue Service (IRS). As part of its general administration and accounting
procedures, JRF will issue to JRF Scholars a 1099 tax form for all JRF special awards
and grants not meeting this standard. Otherwise, JRF Scholars, themselves, are
responsible for ensuring that they are compliant with all relevant IRS regulations.
        Mentoring and Leadership Development Curriculum

The JRF Mentoring and Leadership Development Program is unique in that it follows
a graduated curriculum. JRF’s 42 Strategies for Success Curriculum anchors students
        in six keys areas: leadership and service; academic excellence; health and wellness;
personal and character development; financial empowerment; and career and
professional development. Over the course of four years, the curriculum is delivered
through mentorship, innovative workshops and activities, and webinars/podcasts,
the completion of which constitutes successful graduation from JRF’s MLDP.
        New Scholar Orientation-July 12-15, 2018
Within weeks of being selected, JRF Scholars are required to attend the New
Scholar Orientation (NSO). The orientation will familiarize Scholars with the
expectations of the foundation and will provide workshops and activities from the
42 Strategies for Success Curriculum, designed to help prepare Scholars for the start
of their college careers. In 2018, the NSO will take place July 12th through July 15th
in Dallas, Texas, at the University of Texas at Dallas.

        Scholars’ Mentoring and Leadership Conference–March 1-5, 2019
Each year, JRF Scholars travel to New York City for four days of leadership
development workshops, career exploration seminars, meetings with key public and
private sector leaders, cultural outings, practical life skills training and a community
service project. The Mentoring and Leadership Conference culminates with JRF
Scholars attending JRF’s Annual Awards Dinner, schedule permitting.
Please note that JRF covers the cost of Scholars’ attendance at the Mentoring and
Leadership Conference, however Scholars are responsible for any expenses incurred
should they change the scheduled travel itinerary.
