Mentorship
Mentorship is an integral aspect of the Scholar experience, as mentors support
Scholars in all areas of their professional and personal development. Scholars
will be assigned a SAC member mentor during their first year of the program. The
assignments may be based on where Scholars live or attend college, their intended
major, career interest, or other identified commonalities. Scholars should anticipate
hearing from their mentor throughout the school year via an agreed upon method,
such as email, phone, and text etc. They will have an opportunity to engage with
their SAC mentor in person during formal JRF events and one-on-one as the
mentoring relationship develops and time permits.
In order to be an effective resource, mentors are expected to communicate regularly
with Scholars. It is also your responsibility to be responsive to outreach from your
mentor and to be proactive about communicating with your mentor. If your mentor
is not communicative or responsive, please contact a JRF Program staff member
            for support.
We also recognize that developing a mentoring relationship is often most successful
when it occurs naturally. Hence, JRF builds mentoring opportunities into various
activities. Mentorship will take place through relationships with Scholar Advisory
Committee (SAC) members, fellow JRF Scholars, sponsors, alumni, partners and
staff in a variety of ways.
Scholars and mentors are required to adhere to the Policy Against Harassment
and report to JRF staff immediately if there are any concerns. A Mentor/Mentee
Agreement must be signed and returned before a mentor of any form is assigned.
            Internships and Professional Development
JRF assists Scholars with accessing summer internships and permanent employment
opportunities. Furthermore, JRF Scholars benefit from ongoing career coaching. For
more information contact Damian Travier at dtravier@jackierobinson.org.
            Community Service
JRF scholarship recipients are selected in part because of their demonstrated
commitment to serving others. As a JRF Scholar, you are expected to continue
participating in community service as part of your scholarship. You must document
and report your service activity annually to JRF, providing details about the
organization, population and number of people served. These reports should be
submitted during the fall and summer. Through these efforts, JRF Scholars impact
thousands of lives and gain invaluable skills.
