 From Data to Wisdom Re-visited
Data is a set of discrete facts about events.
The DIKW structure represents the expected usability of information. At the data level, IT concentrates on the consistent capture and storage of base level data (ones & zeros). More data can be captured than could ever possibly be analyzed and considered. At this level, the usability is very small and only for the person who can read binary.
Information comes from providing context to data.
Data must be formatted or organized into something more readable. When it has been formatted, and some context provided, it may be called information. Types of context include
1) who was involved,
2) what happened,
3) when did it happen, and 4) where did it happen.
By this simple organization, the usability of the data has been improved.
