The story behind this painting, (located corridor 3rd floor)
On a cold and dark day in December 2015, an older gentleman came up the stairs to the reception.
He introduced himself as Ulf Smith. He then proceeded to tell me that his grandfather was called Elias Smith. Now the name Mr. Elias Smith, I know of. He owned the hotel from 1905 until his son (Ulf’s father) sold the whole establishment back in 1964. I have read many stories, seen many pictures and heard many tales about the family. And right now, right here in front of me, there is a direct descendant of Mr. Tunneln himself.
Mr. Ulf Smith then proceed to pull out a whole bunch articles, photos, stories and 18mm films, all from back when he grew up here in the hotel. He then asked me if I was interested in hearing his story about Hotel Tunneln (today know as Mayfair Hotel Tunneln).
I very willing agreed and the last 3 hrs. I have spent listening to stories from a time long past.
Now Mr. Smith Jr. Jr., is not the most agile person anymore, but he still insisted, to my joy, in having a whole site/hotel inspection.
After 20 min we arrived to room 453. Now totally unknown to Mr. Smith, room 453 is actually named Elias Smith and has the story of his grandfather on the wall. Now this was something I had had done just last year, actually to honor his grandfather’s legacy. A legacy I had stumbled across in the local library while I was studying up the hotels history.
The joy in Mr. Smith’s face was indescribable, and brought tears to his eyes.
Then after a what must have seemed like a marathon of a walk, up and down, back and forth, the attic and the cellar, we said our farewells but not before Mr. Smith was kind enough to leave me with this painting. A painting of his Grandfather, Elias Smith, the keen eye will notice the hotel in the background.
What a Christmas present.
