George Washington is, when Fersen first meets him, the commander of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. Fersen, who serves as a colonel under the french General, Rochambeau, meets with Washington several times during the war. They respect each other and Fersen becomes a key player in the negotiations between Washington and Rochambeau. Washington speaks little but is very polite and civil with an air of a hero. Fersen becomes more and more interested in Washington’s plans for the new America and during his talks with Washington, who is a slave owner, Fersen foresees the American Civil War. Later Washington awards Fersen with the Order of Cincinnatus, the most prestigious war decoration at the time.
