Lethbridge Stakes Recap
While his rival Storm Cat has fathered a great runner with route proclivity in Giant’s Causeway, many of his offspring and their descendants do better at distances under ten furlongs and quite a few are sprint oriented. There is a lesser chance that a sire
of lasting importance will emerge from a line that
is saturated with speed. The sport as a whole and particularly in the United States is moving in the direction of quickness over stamina and what we
are seeing is increasing fragility and unsoundness becoming embedded in the breed.
Another son of Sadler’s Wells who is doing famously as a stallion is Galileo, who is as regally bred as any horse in the world. His mother is the superb mare Urban Sea who conquered males to win an edition of the Arc. Galileo with just three crops
to have reached the age of three has already sired brilliant 2008 Epsom Derby winner New Approach, Coronation Cup victor Soldier of Fortune, Group One winning lly Allegretto and the aforementioned Red Rocks.
Of note to Canadians, Sadler’s Wells’ late son Not Impossible who stood at stud in this country before his untimely death sired this year’s Queen’s Plate winner Not Bourbon. The deceased stallion’s full brother Perfect Soul, a Grade One winner who did much of his campaigning at Woodbine and whose rst offspring are current two year olds is another North American hopeful for our subject sire.
Sadler’s Wells’ prospects of inheriting the Dancer mantle are enhanced by his having so many sons that have the possibility of founding their own sire lines. Chief among these is Montjeu, a winner of nearly $4,000,000 who achieved the great feat of capturing the Irish and French Derbies plus the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe. Montjeu has already sired European Horse of the Year and nearly $5,000,000 earner Hur- ricane Run, two English Derby winners Motivator and Authorized, 2008 Irish Derby champion Frozen Fire and triple Group One victor Scorpion. With so many outstanding sons, Montjeu stands an excellent
Yet another son of Sadler’s Wells whose stud career is just getting underway with his rst crop age three is High Chaparral, a Derby winner in England and Ireland, twice winner of the Breeder’s Cup Turf, double Eclipse Award Turf Champion and Horse of the World in 2003. He already has a couple of Group race winners and obviously the best is yet to come.
While as everyone who has ever gone to the track knows, there’s no sure thing in horse racing, having the odds on your side is a tremendous asset. From whatever angle you consider, be it royal breeding, the innate ability to handle a classic distance or the rare talent to sire countless top-of-the-line individu- als, Sadler’s Wells looks poised to have signi cant, enduring impact on the thoroughbred breed. Whether history will rank him as Northern Dancer’s greatest son only time will tell, but the exploits of his off- spring and their descendants should provide fans of the sport with plenty of enjoyment for years to come.
