Staring down the barrel of what looked to be the end of racing at the 112-year-old Fort Erie Race Track, the very determined thoroughbred horsepeople along with the city of Fort Erie managed to rescue the 2009 season along with a promise to continue their efforts so that racing will continue in the future.
Established to enhance and develop the breeding and racing of Ontario-Bred horses in Ontario, this year’s TIP offers more than $5.8 million in program incentives including purse supplements for Ontario-bred and Canadian- Bred Stakes, Graded Stakes, participation in the Ontario Sires Stakes Program, and the Ontario Sired Racing Rewards Program, as well as $3.4 million in Breeders Awards and Stallion Owners Awards.
offering of a $50,000 bonus for Registered Ontario-Breds competing at both the Graded Stakes and Ungraded Open Stakes (for llies and mares), and support of eight $100,000 Ontario- Bred overnight Stakes. Fort Erie sales credits and owners’ bonuses, along with sales credits for winning trainers of Yearling Sales Stakes will also be offered.
The season opened at the historic track the weekend of Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3.
An added highlight to this year’s TIP includes an increase in both Breeders Awards and the Ontario-Bred Bonus for owners of purse-winning

The projected amount of purse money up
for grabs for the 2009 Northlands meet will be between $11 - $11.2 million for the 96 day meet, versus $13 million in 2008 for an 111-day season which included racing in Calgary. Overnight purses are budgeted at $92,000 per day.
Fort Erie will also host their series of Cup Races, restricted to regular Fort Erie runners, each worth $25,000 plus and additional $3,750 for Eligible Ontario Breds:
Canadian Derby remains at $300,000
The 80th running of the Canadian Derby will take place on August 22 at Northlands Park in Edmonton. The highlight event of the meet, the purse, which was had been under the threat of being dropped to $200,000 or $250,000 due to a possible shortfall on funding, will remain in tack at $300,000.
The $300,000 purse was made possible last season thanks to $50,000 from the breed improvement program and $50,000 from Horse Racing Alberta. However those options for funding were not available in 2009.
Instead sponsorship and advertising sales
by Northlands Park for www.thehorses.com and the live CTV racing broadcasts, nearly $100,000 was raised to put toward the purse - keeping the Derby as one of the richest events in Western Canada.
The major component determining the amount of purse money for 2009 is the revenue from gaming from Horse Racing Alberta. The HBPA of Alberta was able to negotiate “a more favourable split” for the thoroughbred breed. Other contributors to the purse structure include commissions from simulcast and live wagering.
Fort Erie Slots Cup - July 19; Don Valliere Memorial Cup - July 26; Mike Anderson Memorial Cup - August 3; The Fan’s Cup - August 9; Labatt Cup - September 7; Puss n Boots Cup - September 7; Longshots OTB Cup - October 25; The Game Cup - October 25; Cheldon Tour de Fort Cup - October 27
The budgeted purses for 2009 will remain in tact unless there is a signi cant decrease in live and simulcast wagering.
HBPA Alberta manager Mat Monaco was quoted on Horse Racing Alberta’s website www.thehorses.com, “(This year) will be
a most dif cult year for racing in Alberta. Notwithstanding the current economic downturn, the major factor in reduced funding is that fact that after March 31, 2009 there will be no gaming revenue earned in Calgary since there currently
