The show is over for another year and it didn’t disappoint. History was made, great plans reduced to ashes and for some, worthy performances from youngsters destined to become the stars of the future.
Having been sidelined
by a heart condition and 50/50 to actually run two weeks before the race,
he was eventually given
the go-ahead to line up. Favouritism had since been taken by his stablemate Kauto Star, although no horse in the history of the race has ever been able to regain its crown, but then Kauto Star is no ordinary horse. Besides being a proli c winner at the highest level, he has that truly champion attribute of being able to win at the highest level over any distance between 2 and 3 1⁄4 miles.
In the closing stages of the race Kauto Star was upsides Denman as the two rounded the bend for home, but the 7/4 favourite was going so well that Ruby Walsh had no choice but to go on and
it was then that he stamped his supreme authority on
the race and galloped up the infamous Cheltenham hill to win by 13 lengths.
The pinnacle of steeplechasing is the Cheltenham Gold Cup and in the months building up to the race it was not devoid of a story or two, namely that of ante-post favourite and reigning champion Denman.

Denman after a ne second may run at Aintree in April, while Kauto Star will be aimed at a light campaign next season with Down Royal, King George and then the Gold Cup (5/2 with the Tote) as the plan. Over 1000 well-wishers turned out the next morning in the village to see the Gold Cup stable stars parade, along with other top horses, Master Minded, Big Bucks and Gold Cup third Neptune Collonges.
